Top Ten Tuesday: Series I’ve yet to finish

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Top Ten Finished Series I’ve yet to Finish. 

I am actually not much of a series reader, despite the fact that almost every YA novel published these days seems to require a contract for a trilogy. Sometimes an excellently written stand-alone novel is much better than a series of average novels. However, there are a few series that I really enjoy and keep up with (the Dresden Files is probably my favorite), some ongoing series that I’m behind on (still haven’t finished Dance with Dragons or anything beyond book 5 in the Outlander books) and then there’s others that have already concluded, but I still haven’t finished. Of those there’s a few that I know I’ll probably try to continue, though I’m not in quite as much a hurry to get through them.

So here is my list of Top Ten Finished Series I have Yet to Finish:

1. Discworld

I only started reading the Discworld novels over the summer, but I already love them. Terry Pratchett was definitely one of a kind. I’m only about five books in, so I still have a long way to go, but I’m really looking forward to reading through the entire series. I only wish I had given them a chance much sooner.

2. Sword of Truth

I guess technically this series isn’t finished, but according to Wikipedia the next book will likely be the last and I’m nowhere near finished with this series. (I’ve only read the first two books at this point.) I might finish it someday, but to be honest it’s not high on my reading priority list. While I like Richard and Kahlan, these books are really slow reads for me; it took forever just to read through the first two books, and there are many books much higher on my list than this series.

3. Fables

The final volume of this graphic novel series came out over the summer, I believe, but I’m still on volume 3. I really like them so far, so I’ll definitely be reading this one through to the end. This is another one that I wish I had discovered much sooner.

4. The Millenium Novels (Lisbeth Salander)

I’m not sure if I even count the latest release as part of the series, I’m skeptical of books published posthumously. However, I still need to finish the third book of the original trilogy anyway. I loved the first two books, but they are very dense novels that require a lot of time and focus to read (at least for me) and I just haven’t had the chance yet.

5. Eragon (The Inheritance Cycle)

Every time I try to read these books I get stuck after the second one. I started Brisinger this time, but still haven’t finished it (in fact, I think I’m less than a hundred pages in and I haven’t looked at it in months). I own all four books, so I do intend to read them all someday. I just don’t know what my mental block is about.

6. Sandman

I love Neil Gaiman, and I love these graphic novels. However, I am reading through them very slowly for some unknown reason. I still have about 4-5 volumes of the original series to finish.

7. The Mortal Instruments

This one may be surprising to some, as I am a really big fan of Cassandra Clare’s books. And I love The Mortal Instrument books – at least, I loved the first three. However, City of Glass ended so well (which is rare for third books in a YA series) that I really believed it was the end of the series, and I was actually disappointed when I realized she was continuing it. Then books four and five weren’t terrible, but they weren’t nearly as good as the original three and now I’m just having a really hard time finishing City of Heavenly Fire. I’m about halfway through it, and have been for well over a year now. I also haven’t read The Bane Chronicles yet, but I’m much more excited about that book.

8. Hush, Hush

I liked this one, but just never got a chance to read the rest of the series among all the other books in my TBR pile. I’m sure I will someday, because I’m curious about what happens next. However, very few YA series do not let me down by the third book, so I’m always hesitant to continue even when I really like the first one.

9. Fallen

Fallen had a beautiful cover, and I couldn’t resist reading it based on that alone. I actually enjoyed the first book, but then got distracted and never had a chance to read the rest of the series.This is another one that I’m now hesitant to try and finish based solely on how disappointed I often am with a YA series.

10. The Mazerunner

I’m going to be honest and admit that I had an ARC of The Mazerunner on my TBR pile for a very long time, and didn’t have a whole lot of interest in reading it until I heard Dylan O’Brien was going to be in the movie. O’Brien is one of my favorite young actors (who I’m sure will be around long after Teen Wolf), so I finally decided I had to read the book before the movie came out. I liked this book, it was a lot more interesting than I had anticipated. And I have all the others in the series, I think, I just haven’t found time to read them (even though I really wanted to read The Scorch Trials before that movie came out).
