Top Ten Tuesday: My Fall TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s category is Top Ten Books on My Fall To Be Read List. 

I love fall. It’s my favorite time of year.  I love the warm drinks, bonfires, cooler temperatures, warmer clothes, the colorful leaves… I love everything about it, except what comes next (not a big fan of winter). I tend to think of fall as the perfect time for reading. Everyone talks about Summer Reading, but really Fall is the perfect time to curl up on the couch with a blanket, a good book and a cup of hot apple cider. That’s my ideal reading experience.

My Fall reading list is just as long as my Summer one (if not longer). Fall tends to be the leftover summer books, with a few traded out for things I’m more interested in this time of year. In general I tend to add books to my TBR list much faster than I can read them, so at any given time there are probably hundreds of books on my overall TBR list – over a hundred of which are patiently sitting on a shelf (or in piles) next to my bed waiting to be read. However, there are a few that I’m more anxious to get to than others, so this list shouldn’t be too hard. Actually, the hardest point will be just narrowing down my list to my top 10 books.

1. The Witches by Stacey Schiff

This is a nonfiction book on the Salem Witch Trials by the author of Cleopatra: A Life. My 8x-Great Grandmother was one of the women executed during that time period, so I’m fascinated by it. This book is #1 on my list for fall. I’m actually a little disappointed I haven’t gotten to it yet, but I’ve been trying to prioritize my ARCs in order of publication. I have read just the introduction chapter and it was such a tease and just made me even more impatient to start reading.

2. The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra

I had requested this ARC over the summer and it sounded like a really interesting premise – a series of short stories about characters through time whose lives all intersect via a work of art – and I am really looking forward to reading it. I’ve read a few pages of the first story in the book and it is definitely good so far. This will probably be the next book I read after I finish the ARC I’m reading right now.

3. Kingdom of Scars by Eoin Macken

I am a big fan of Eoin Macken, whom Merlin fans will recognize as Gwaine (He’s also on NBC’s Night Shift). The Irish actor released his first novel last year, and I’ve been patiently waiting for it to be published in the US. However, a year later it’s still only available on Kindle, so I finally ordered it from the UK last month. It arrived a couple weeks ago and I can’t wait to finally start reading it. Bonus – when it arrived I discovered that this copy was actually signed by Eoin!

4. Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles Book 1) by Marissa Meyer

I have had many people tell me that they really enjoyed The Lunar Chronicles, and I’ve picked up this book in a book store many times over the past year and then just ended up putting it back down without buying it. I finally picked it up and held onto it while shopping with a friend for my birthday and now I’m hoping to get to it this fall. I just hope it lives up to the hype (I’ve been promised it does).

5. Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman

I actually find it somewhat disgraceful that I haven’t read this book yet. I bought it the day it came out and was extremely excited about it, then it was added to my TBR pile and hasn’t been touched since. I love everything by Neil Gaiman, especially his short stories, so I know I’m going to love this. I just need to sit down and read it. I’m really hoping I can get to it before too long.

6. The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas

This is another book that I bought months ago intending to read immediately but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I wanted to have it read before Queen of Shadows, but I was doing to hold off on QoS just to read this, so it’s still sitting in my room unread. I will definitely get to it this fall. Maybe. Hopefully?

7. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

My former elementary school librarian is a volunteer where my mother works, and has started passing along book recommendations to me through her. The first one was The Martian, so now I am willing to read anything she tells me to; she also recommended The Dog Stars, which was a really interesting novel I never would have discovered otherwise. This book is another one I had never heard of until she recommended it, but it immediately went on my reading list. I’m hoping to get to it soon.

8. Twain’s End by Lynn Cullen

This is a new novel by the author of Mrs. Poe, which I haven’t yet read but have heard mixed reviews about. Since Mark Twain is one of my favorite classic American authors, I decided to request the ARC when I was given opportunity. It sounds like it may be an interesting story, though I’m always hesitant about this kind of historical fiction – I hate not knowing how much is fact and how much is fiction.

9. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I am currently in the middle of reading the Grisha Trilogy for the first time – I had purchased a copy of Shadow and Bone over a year ago and just got around to reading it. I’ve been seeing a lot of early reviews for this new novel, and am curious to read it. However, since it’s set in the same world I want to make sure I finish these books first.

10. Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jennifer Lawson

Lawson has a new memoir coming out, but I still haven’t had a chance to read this one, though it’s been on my list forever. I love reading her blog, and reading humorous memoirs in general, so I’m sure I will love this book. I just need to actually pick it up and read it. Hopefully I will get to that sometime this fall.

Narrowing my list down to just 10 books was harder than I thought it would be! There are still quite a few I would love to get to in the next couple months. (Why can’t there be more hours in the day just for reading?) You can definitely see from this list how varied and eclectic my reading interests can be. What 10 books are on your Fall TBR list?
