Top Ten Tuesday: Books to Read if You Liked…

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s category is Ten Books To Read If You Like This Super Popular Book/Author. 

This is actually a hard category for me because for some reason I feel like I am terrible at the whole “if you like this then try….” thing. I don’t know why. but I have trouble making equal comparisons. However, I’m going to try my best.

If You Liked / Then Try:

1. Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen/ The Sparrow Sisters by Ellen Herrick

If you like the subtle magical realism of any of Allen’s books, you will probably enjoy The Sparrow Sisters as well. Set in a small New England town, the novel focuses on an unusual group of siblings with just a hint of power. This is a terrific book for fall.

2. World War Z by Max Brooks / The Reapers Are the Angels by Alden Bell

World War Z probably isn’t a great comparison for The Reapers are the Angels, but if you like zombie books that have character development and follow the impact of the outbreak this is a really good read. I read this years ago, but it really stuck with me.

3. The Girl on the Train by Paula Jenkins / In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

I still don’t quite understand why anyone would read and like The Girl on the Train, but if you did give In a Dark, Dark Wood a try. This was a really compelling mystery about what happened during a bachelorette weekend in the woods.

4. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas / Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

I know a lot of bloggers have already read Snyder’s books – I see them pop up on a lot of Top Ten lists – but just in case you haven’t, you really should; especially if you’re a Throne of Glass fan. Yelena, the main character of Snyder’s Study books, is one of my favorite female characters ever.

5. The Watchmen by Alan Moore and David Gibbons / Jupiter’s Legacy by Mike Millar and Frank Quietly

This comic series has a similar dystopian view of superheroes as The Watchmen did. The storyline takes a look at what happens when people with powers decide they can rule better than the government.

6. The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith / Shattered Blue by Lauren Bird Horowitz

Shattered Blue is basically The Vampire Diaries with faeries instead of vampires. There are a lot of similarities in the plot, so if you enjoyed the original Vampire Diaries novels and don’t mind the parallels, you’ll probably enjoy this book as well.

7. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee / Crazy in Alabama by Mark Childress

I just discovered this book a few months ago when one of my managers told me to read it. The novel is set in the 60s and deals heavily with racial tensions, but there’s also a lot of craziness going on. There is a lot of humor in this book to balance out the heaviness of the setting.

8. The Fault in our Stars by John Green / Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

I enjoyed Everything, Everything more than The Fault in Our Stars because it wasn’t nearly as depressing. The Fault in Our Stars is a good book, but it’s just not my kind of book. If you liked it, but would like something with a happier ending, try Everything, Everything.

9. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins / Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Red Rising is kind of like a cross between The Hunger Games and Divergent, combining the idea of the games and factions. However, it’s darker and even more violent than The Hunger Games. There are also a few echoes of Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles in here.

10. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa / The Human (War of the Seasons Book One) by Janine K. Spendlove

I have yet to actually finish the War of the Seasons series, but I really enjoyed the first book. It doesn’t deal so much with the Fae courts the way the Iron Fae series does, instead focusing on creatures of faerie tales, but there were similarities.
