Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

Posted on Updated on

SisterhoodNow I think I’m all caught up on these awards! Sorry it took me so long. Thank you to Reader in a Reverie for nominating me for this one!

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and add a link to their blog in your post.
  • Answer the questions provided by the blogger who nominated you.
  • Nominate ten other bloggers.
  • Create ten questions for your nominees and notify them of their nomination.
Questions I’m Answering:
  1. If you could take any fictional character to the cinema, who would you take, and what film would you see? I honestly have no idea, and I’ve been thinking about this forever. This is probably a boring answer, but I’m going with Elizabeth Bennett. Mostly because I think she’d be fun to hang out with. And I think we’d go see some adaptation of an Austen book.
  2. Why did you start a blog? I really love writing and sharing my opinions on stuff
  3. Your favourite blog post (the post you most enjoyed writing)?  I’m not sure it’s my favorite, but the one I’m most proud of is actually a two-part post that started as a grad school assignment about female characters on television. It’s called, ‘”But You’re Just a Girl:” Television and the Strong Female Lead.’ The link to part two is at the bottom of that post.
  4. Favourite male character? So hard! I honestly don’t know if I have one, but at this very moment I’d probably go with Mark Watney from The Martian, because I’ve read the book twice this summer and just love his sense of humor.
  5. Favourite female character? Again, I don’t know if I really have one. I love Elizabeth Bennett of course, and Yelena from the Study series by Maria Snyder.
  6. Least favourite character? Dolores Umbridge. No other character has made my skin crawl as much as her. I also really dislike Quentin Coldwater from The Magicians.
  7. If you could pair a fictional book character with a Disney character, who would you pair and why (romantically or otherwise)? I’m totally cheating and picking a Marvel character, since technically they’re Disney. I’d love to see how Tony Stark and Harry Dresden would get along. The snark would be through the roof (plus Harry would accidentally hex every one of Tony’s nifty little gadgets).
  8. The book that made you the most emotional? Harry Potter, without a doubt. I still go through every emotion possible every time I read through those books. They are still incredible.
  9. A song that reminds you of a book? It doesn’t remind me of a specific book, but every time I hear “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons I think of some dystopian world. Actually that’s not true – I’m currently reading Red Rising and “Radioactive” reminds me of that a little.
  10. If you could take any character and put them into another book world, who would you put in what world? These are all great and clever questions, I apologize that I have rather boring answers! I think I’d take Celaena from Throne of Glass and put her in Ixia (The Study series). I think she would get along great with Yelena and be a perfect lieutenant for Valek.
Questions I’m Asking:
  1. What is your Patronus?
  2. What is your favorite quote from the book you’re currently reading?
  3. What book should be made into a TV series?
  4. What book do you recommend people NOT read?
  5. If you could travel to any fictional world, what would it be and what would you do there?
  6. What do you like to do when you’re not reading?
  7. What is your favorite non-romantic ship/pair?
  8. What book is your go-to recommendation?
  9. Where is your favorite spot to read?
  10. Which characters, from two separate books/series, would you like to see interact with eachother?
People I’m Nominating:

As I stated in my previous Award posts this week, I’m breaking the rules a little at this point. I’ve been nominated for three of these types of awards in the past week or so, and each comes with a rule about nominating 10-15 people. That’s nearly 40 blogs when you add it all up! That’s a lot of blogs. (Unless I just nominated the same ones each time, but that feels like cheating.) So, what I’m going to do instead is nominate five other blogs for each of these awards.

Sunshine Blogger Award

Posted on Updated on

The second of these award posts I’m trying to catch up on is the Sunshine Blogger Award. Thanks to The Lit Mermaid for nominating me!

The Rules:
  • Thank the person/people who nominated you
  • Answer the questions from your nominators.
  • Nominate eleven other bloggers and give them eleven questions.

Well, that sounds easy enough! Here goes nothing…

Questions I’m answering:

1. If you had only 24 hours to live, what would you do? I honestly don’t know. I’d like to answer something cool like skydiving, but it’d probably be something way nerdier than that, like track down Tom Hiddleston and get a hug before I die.

2. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Now this is something that I have thought about on many occasions! I used to think I wanted telepathy, but I’d probably get tired of hearing everyone’s thoughts. (And who really wants to know what everyone is thinking all the time?) I think I’d like to have a power similar to Rogue’s – where I can absorb and manifest anyone else’s powers. Except I’d want full control so I can turn it on and off (and not have to worry about touching people).

3. Are you allergic to anything? Lots of things. Mostly the outdoors. Pollen, trees, grass, mold, cats, dogs (fortunately the last two aren’t severe enough to make me give up my pets).

4. Who’s your favorite author? That question is just too hard. I don’t have one. I love Neil Gaiman, Tana French, Jim Butcher, Jen Lancaster, Maria Snyder … and the list goes on.

5. Blue or green eyes? I have blue, but I like green.

6. Are you a member of a book club? Yep! We’re a scifi/fantasy book club called Watch the Skies.

7. What time do you usually get up in morning? Too early. It really depends on if I’m working that morning or not. I’m not a morning person, but if I’m working I’m up around 7 (my alarm actually goes off for the first time around 6:30) and if not then it’s usually between 8:30 and 9. I am not a morning person.

8. Any goal you have for yourself? Right now I really want to finish the book I started a year ago and can’t seem to finish. I’m about halfway through it. My life goal is to be some sort of writer. I just want to get paid to do what I love.

9. What always makes you laugh? The IT Crowd. Amy Poehler. The Princess Bride.

10. How do you take your coffee/tea? Coffee: LOTS of cream and sugar Tea: tiny bit of milk and 2 tsp suger.

11. What was the last thing you geeked-out about? At the time I’m writing this the answer would be when J.K. Rowling tweeted that James Sirius Potter was sorted into Gryffindor house. (I’m scheduling this post, so I’m sure something will come up in the meantime, but that really had me geeking out because I am a HUGE Harry Potter nerd.)

Questions I’m asking:
  1. What was your last book hangover?
  2. Where is your favorite spot to read?
  3. What book should be made into a TV series?
  4. What is your favorite quote?
  5. What is your favorite non reading/blogging activity?
  6. Where is your dream vacation?
  7. What book do you recommend people NOT read?
  8. Physical book or eBook?
  9. What book on your TBR pile are you most excited about but never get to?
  10. What class do you wish was offered in school (or had been while you were there)?
  11. What is at the top of your Christmas wish list?
People I’m Nominating:

As I did with my previous Blogger Recognition Award post,  I’m afraid I’m going to have to break the rules here.

Blogger Recognition Award

Posted on Updated on

Blogger RecognitionIn the last couple week’s I’ve been nominated for several different awards posts, and have been slow about actually doing them. Starting this week I will try to slowly work my way through them. First up: Blogger Recognition Award!

Thank you to Don’t Shush Me! for nominating me!

What is the Award?

The name pretty much gives it away. This award was created by Edge of Night to recognize other bloggers and their contributions to the blogosphere. As with many of these awards, it’s a cool way to let other bloggers know you appreciate their efforts, as well as help others discover blogs they may not be reading.

The Rules:

1. Select 15 other blogs you want to give this award to. Do some digging if you have to! Find those blogs. (And no tag backs!)

2. Write a post to show off your award! Give a brief story of how your blog got started, and give a piece or two advice to new bloggers. List the person who nominated you, and include your award in the post!

3. Comment on each blog to let them know you’ve nominated them. Provide a link to your award post.

4. Provide a link to the original post on Edge of Night. This way, anyone can find the original post if needed, and we can keep track of the award’s origins.

My Origin Story:

It has been a long slow road to where I am today on this blog. I’ve been some sort of blogger for as long as I can remember – Xanga, Livejournal, MySpace, Blogger – you name it, I tried it. This blog has gone through many incarnations before WordPress became it’s permanent home in 2009. Then it went through several more makeovers before arriving at what you see today. I’m a writer at heart. I love to write and share my thoughts and opinions. For five years I would post sporadically to this blog on an extremely wide variety of topics, but never consistently. Sometimes a year would pass between posts.

In January of this year I made a resolution to post at least once a week. My topics were still on a wide variety of things, but I was finally posting consistently. I stuck mostly to topics that I’m fairly passionate about, meaning things that I tend to fangirl over – television, movies, celebrities, and books. I had finally arrived at a place where I felt good about my blog and I was starting to build an audience.

However, over the summer I decided to put my blog through one more makeover. While I enjoy writing about a variety of topics, my favorite thing to post about was books. And I started noticing that my book-related posts were the ones that seemed to be the most popular as well (with the exception of my Supergirl review, which is my highest viewed post ever). So, I decided it was time to transition into a mostly book-related blog. I’m sure I’ll post about random things once in a while (because let’s face it, I am a random person) but for now it’s all about the books and I’m really enjoying. I’ve also really enjoyed discovering other book lovers and bloggers in the past couple months.

My Advice:

I am a terrible one to give advice to other bloggers, because I definitely did everything wrong when I first started this blog, but here’s a couple things:

  1. Make. Yourself. Write. This pretty much goes for anything if you want to be any kind of writer. You have to force yourself to sit down and just do it. Even if what you’re writing isn’t great, you still need to write. I made myself post at least once a week this year, and it has developed into a habit. Now I’m posting several times a week and I bought a whole planner last night just so I can plan out my posts. But the first step is to just sit down and write. Start with once a week. Then build from there.
  2. Write what you love. Again, this is pretty generic advice that anyone could give you, but it’s so true. If you’re not passionate about what you’re blogging about, then you won’t care. And don’t worry about being judged for it. I won’t hate you if you don’t agree that The Princess Bride is the greatest movie ever made (we won’t be able to be friends, but I won’t hate you).
  3. Connect with other bloggers. The accountability thing actually works. Plus, I feel a lot more inspired to blog more when I’m regularly reading other peoples’ posts. Also, those bloggers may give you ideas for ways to improve your blog and your writing. Additionally, if you sign up for a weekly post meme, such as Top Ten Tuesdays by The Broke and the Bookish, it’ll not only help you to discover lots of other bloggers, but it also helps make sure you have at least some piece of content to post every week. Then your once-a-week post is taken care of and you can start planning other posts.
I Nominate…

And now comes the hard part, because I never know who to nominate for these things. Also, I’m afraid I’m going to break the rules here. As I stated above, I’ve been nominated for three of these types of awards in the past week or so, and each comes with a rule about nominating 10-15 people. That’s nearly 40 blogs when you add it all up! That’s a lot of blogs. (Unless I just nominated the same ones each time, but that feels like cheating.) So, what I’m going to do instead is nominate five other blogs for each of these awards.
